The white crested waves smashed against the side of the boat.  The young man grabbed his wife's arm as the boat they were in was tossed, saving her from going overboard. "Do you see those rocks in the distance," His wife shouted above the storm. "What was that?  I don't see much of anything through this spray and the fog!" He shouted back. I was there.  I saw it with my own eyes.  The beach was pure white sand like the ivory of elephant tusks.  The water was smooth as the skin of the young men and women swimming in them.  Children built sand castles, adolescents admired each other by the water's edge, people of all ages frolicked in the water, a girl was dying.  The lifeguard had dragged her out of the water, but she wasn't breathing.  He tried to force life back into her, but she was dying.  Some people were watching with curios looks, like children watching the birth of an animal.  A girl popped h

She lost her grip on life on Tuesday.  The funeral was Sunday.  Ralph sat in the pew, half hearing the words from the preacher at the pulpit.  After the service, Ralph was vaguely aware of getting up and moving through the chapel, down the aisle, into the reception, where people drank blood-red punch and tried to talk around the death, pretending that it had no impact on them, or even that it didn't happen.  Ralph couldn't do that, so he stood in a corner. From his corner, he could see his cousins flirting with some neighborhood boys who had been good friends with Ralph's brother, and knew his mother so well.  The boys returned his cousins'

"So what's new this week," the therapist asked the young woman who was sitting before him "Very little, actually," the woman replied "Really?  I feel like you're not telling me something.  You look uncomfortable." The woman fought back her emotions for a moment, reaching in her purse for lip gloss and slowly spreading it across her lips, making the man across from her wish she weren't a client, "yes, he did." Sweat dripped from her brow, both from the temperature of the room and her own internal mechanisms.  All she could see were the faces, red with slick, slimy make-up, and the ugly, fake hair that sprouted from their heads like long blades of dying grass.  One of them came down to her level and smiled at her, revealing unnaturally white teeth that contrasted sharply with his red lips and the make-up he was wearing.  A laugh like sandpaper being scraped across ice escaped from those lips, and she felt her fear preparing to leak out of her eyes.  The mouth of the man in front of her reminded her of a monster, with its lips red from its last meal.

He stepped on the brakes hard, but knew as he did that it was a futile gesture. What was this idiot doing in the wrong lane? ‘Well’, he thought, ‘I don’t know the guy’s name, so Idiot will work for me’. He closed his eyes, wondering what death would be like. He gave the younger girl another push, "so, are you going to cry, you little baby?" This sent the poor child, a small 10 year-old, into tears, wetting her cheeks with their warm cascades.  The boy only laughed at her display, emboldened by her tears, and pushed her harder, this time knocking her to the ground, causing her to cry louder, and drawing attention from those around him.  The teachers, however, had not yet taken notice, so the boy continued unabated, towering over the cowering girl. "What 'you lookin' at, brat?" the boy yelled at the girl, who was suddenly looking at him with big, surprised eyes.  When she wouldn't stop staring, h

She gently picked the note up off her windshield and turned it over, seeing the words once, but not fully taking them in.  She looked at the note again, trying to absorb the two simple words written upon it, yet still failing to do so.  Her eyes wandered the paper one last time before shock and fear suddenly filled her brain, and she had to support herself against the car in order to keep from falling over.  As the note fluttered to the ground, she regained her composure enough to reach down and pick it up before anyone else saw the neat handwriting delivering its horrid message. Pale, she opened the car door and threw herself into the seat,
